Drones To Deliver Library Books To School Kids In Virginia

00:01:36

Video prices: IQD 240/day

In order to complete their summer reading, school kids in Virginia will now have library books delivered to them by drone. A middle school librarian from Montgomery County School District came up with the idea after libraries closed due to COVID-19. Kelly Passek had been using a drone delivery service from a company named ‘Wing’ to deliver food and household items. After seeing how successful the service was, she petitioned the company to start delivering library books. They will now be delivering books to students that live in the company’s Christiansburg delivery area. I think kids are going to be just thrilled to learn that they are going to be the first in the world to receive a library book by drone, Kelly Passek, Middle School Librarian. ‘Wing’, who is owned by Google’s parent company ‘Alphabet’, received federal approval to deliver by drone in Virginia. The company, which also operates in Europe and Australia, can deliver packages that weigh up to three pounds. It is hoped that this service will help people that live far away from public libraries, even after the pandemic has passed.
