According to a new study, spending a long time editing selfies for social media negatively affects a person's body image. Researchers at Flinders University analyzed the selfie habits of 130 women between the ages of 18 - 30. It was found that the more time they spent editing selfies, the worse their mood and dissatisfaction with their looks. Study participants spent roughly four and a half minutes editing up to five selfies in order to smooth skin tone or remove flaws. Despite being happier with the edited selfie, the study found that the editing process still had negative consequences. "These activities have detrimental effects in terms of poorer mood and facial dissatisfaction," Professor Marika Tiggemann, Flinders University. Professor Marika Tiggemann says that teenagers and young women should be dissuaded from editing such photos. It was also found that over-editing your selfies can lead to feeling disingenuous online. "Our findings illustrate the difficulties women encounter in negotiating the contemporary social media world, Professor Marika Tiggemann," Flinders University.
