According to a recent study, toddlers who frequently engage with screens may face setbacks in their language development. Toddlers aged 17 to 30 months spend nearly two hours daily watching videos, marking a 100% increase from pre-pandemic estimates. The study highlights a clear negative correlation between increased exposure to digital media and vocabulary development in young children. Videos used for soothing or 'babysitting' purposes led to toddlers using phrases with fewer words. However, when videos served educational goals or fostered connections, such as video chats with family, the negative impact diminished. Researchers are urging caregivers to be mindful of the content their children watch, given the role language plays in early development. Caregivers should consider both the educational and entertainment value while also actively engaging with toddlers during screen time.
