Nouhaila Benzina made Women’s World Cup history during Morocco’s surprise victory over South Korea. Benzina became the first player to wear a hijab at a senior-level Women’s World Cup. The 25-year-old defender wore a white Islamic headscarf in Morocco’s 1-0 win over South Korea in Adelaide. A result that kept alive Morocco’s hopes of qualifying for the knockout stages on their World Cup debut. The wearing of head coverings for religious reasons was authorized by FIFA in 2014. FIFA had previously banned the hijab on health and safety grounds, but that was changed ahead of the 2014 Under-17 Women’s World Cup in Jordan. Benzina has made 17 international appearances for Morocco.
