A member of the Panama National football team has been shot dead in the city of Colón. Gunmen opened fire on a group of people, including 26-year-old Gilberto Hernandez, who had gathered in a building in the city. The two gunmen had forced a taxi driver to take them to a building in the city's Barrio Norte neighborhood, before opening fire. They later fled the scene, however, one suspect was arrested in an apartment close to the scene of the crime. The Club Atlético Independiente player was killed while several others were injured in the shooting, the motive for which has yet to be clarified. The shooting is the latest round of violence in the city, with gangs continuing to fight over the port city’s drug smuggling routes. There have been 50 people killed in the city this year, prompting Gilberto's father to urge the city's youth to "stop the violence."
