You might have come across the term "soft socializing" on your social media feed recently, it’s the newest Gen Z social trend that prioritizes low effort hangouts. Rather than centering plans around going out, drinking or large, high-energy group settings, soft socializing embraces low effort, activity-based gatherings where connection can develop more naturally. The activity can be anything from doing a jigsaw puzzle together, to learning a new craft like pottery or painting, the idea is to lower the expectation of constantly being social. With the activity being the focal point, pauses in the conversation can occur without feeling awkward or uncomfortable. According to Robert Alexander, a PHD assistant professor of Psychology, soft-socializing “shifts the goal away from performing to being present.” In soft socializing, alcohol also takes a backseat. This can be a welcome change for those who feel the increased social pressure of alcohol-focused environments. For Gen Z, a generation that has grown up documenting much of their lives online, alcohol consumption can feel tied to social pressure and anxiety. According to a recent study, 92% of Gen Zers believe that being true to yourself is extremely important. A move away from performing and into authenticity may help explain this trend. One of the best things about soft-socializing is that it can be inexpensive too. Something as simple as sitting with a friend while each person does their own task can count as a hangout.
