Macy’s will be the first U.S. department store to sell hijabs. The store is debuting the “Verona Collection,” a modest clothing brand featuring dresses, cardigans and handmade hijabs. Created with Muslim women’s fashion in mind, Co-Founder Lisa Vogl launched the line in 2015 after converting to Islam and realizing modest clothing is rare and expensive. The single mom invested $7,000 to start the company, which is now a global success. “Verona Collection is more than a clothing brand. It’s a platform for a community of women to express their personal identity and embrace fashion that makes them feel confident on the inside and outside.” Stated Vogl. According to the Washington Post, there are other clothing brands that have started to embrace Islamic fashion, including Nike and American Eagle, which both sell hijabs in their stores. The Verona Collection will be available on the Macy’s website. Hopefully this is a sign that the fashion and retail industry is slowly becoming more welcoming and tolerant. As stated in the New York Times, “According to the Global Islamic Economy report, Muslim millennials are considered a powerful and growing economic force that will continue to transform the retail space with digital spending. Half of Muslims today are under 15 years old and nearly two-thirds are 30 or younger.”
