On the day the Italian Senate passed a tougher immigration law, Monday, a small wooden boat was filmed landing about 40 migrants on an uninhabited beach in Italy. According to what the video footage shows, the fishing boat successfully reached the shore of Punta Bianca, in Agrigento, without being intercepted by the Italian authorities. After the boat docked, the migrants disembarked, made their way from the boat to the beach, then climbed the hill until they disappeared behind it. Many times, small boats carrying dozens of migrants coming from North African countries reach the shores of Italy without being discovered, and the moments of their arrival happen to be photographed by locals in what has become known as the “ghost landing.” The new Italian law, strongly supported by Interior Minister Matteo Salvini and his far-right party, imposes maximum fines on ships entering Italian waters without a license at one million euros, up from 50,000 euros previously. It also stipulates the arrest of those who ignore orders to stay away from Italian waters, and the automatic seizure of their boats by the naval forces. This came against the backdrop of a number of naval vessels rescuing migrants whose boat sank while trying to reach the Italian coast. Salvini has repeatedly clashed with humanitarian organizations that defend migrants, while on the other hand his popularity has risen among right-wing voters due to his consistent anti-immigrant stance.
