US authorities said that an armed man attacked an immigration detention center in Washington, yesterday, Saturday, and threw incendiary devices at the building and cars parked in the center’s parking lot, before police officers opened fire on him. The 69-year-old man died instantly, according to what the Associated Press reported, citing a US police official. Tacoma police said in a statement issued immediately after 1:00 p.m., “An employee at the Northwest Detention Center in Tacoma reported that a vehicle caught fire, and added that the suspect was also trying to set fire to a huge propane warehouse outside the center.” Four officers shot the man upon arrival and pronounced him dead at the scene. His identity was later revealed to be a 69-year-old man named Willem van Spronsen. The Northwest Detention Center is managed by the GEO Group on behalf of the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and is the fourth largest immigration detention center in the United States of America. A police spokeswoman told Reuters that she had opened an investigation with the FBI and other security agencies to ascertain the man's motives, adding that his medical report is expected to be issued tomorrow, Monday. However, a friend of the man told The Times that she and a group of friends received a farewell letter from him, adding that he was a follower of the anarchist doctrine and that he “believed that an attack on the center would spark a deadly conflict.” Also on Euronews: Migrants chant "No place to shower" during the US Vice President's visit to an immigration detention center The Trump administration issues orders to deport about one million illegal immigrants from the country
