Mohammed Siraj has become India’s go-to workhorse in red-ball cricket. Over the past two years, he has bowled the third-most overs among pacers, only behind Cummins and Starc, consistently taking on heavy workloads without showing signs of breakdown. Unlike Jasprit Bumrah, who is carefully managed through rest and rotation, Siraj rarely gets a breather. The question is valid: Should India rest him? Arguments for rest suggest that over-bowling could impact his effectiveness, especially with the old ball. Even Rohit Sharma admitted Siraj wasn’t at his best in the lead-up to the Champions Trophy qualifiers, having been overused across formats. But here’s the counter: India needs Siraj right now. With Akash Deep, Arshdeep Singh, and Nandre Burger ruled out due to injuries, options are limited. Moreover, Siraj is used to this kind of grind. The Ranji Trophy schedules routinely demand 4–5 first-class matches with minimal rest, and Siraj has consistently performed well under these conditions. Add to that, Aussie pacers like Cummins and Starc have played long stretches without rest. And so can Siraj. He, unlike Bumrah, is not injury-prone and has a more natural, less strenuous action. For now, Mohammed Siraj doesn’t need rotation—he needs support.
