Taking supplements and multivitamins does not lead to a lower risk of dying, suggests new research. People worldwide take supplements hoping to maintain good health, but the benefits and risks of regular use remain unclear. The National Institutes of Health’s National Cancer Institute USA analyzed data from around 400,000 healthy US adults over a 20-year period. Healthy adults who took daily multivitamins and health supplements didn’t have a lower risk of dying compared to those who didn’t take them. Some vitamins may actually have an impact on other drugs being taken, such as vitamin K, which may reduce the efficacy of anticoagulant warfarin. Researchers noted that focusing more on consuming nutritious food than supplements would be more beneficial for health.
