Adelaide United’s Josh Cavallo, the first openly gay top-flight footballer, announced that he proposed to his partner on the club’s home pitch. Cavallo, who came out to the footballing world in 2021, posted the announcement on X with the caption “Starting this year with my fiancee”. The 24-year-old vowed to change the sport’s culture after coming out “to show that everyone is welcome in the game of football”. Cavallo thanked the club for helping set up the surprise at Cooper Stadium and was grateful for them providing him with a “safe space in football”. He is an advocate for the LGBTQ community in sports and was named “Man of the Year” in 2022 by the LGBTQ publication Attitude Magazine. The Australian has been outspoken on many topics, including FIFA’s decision to ban the One Love armband at the 2022 World Cup in Qatar. Cavallo didn’t make the squad for the tournament but felt “excluded” by the decision and wished Australia’s captain, Matthew Ryan, had worn it.
