The competition for the Best Player in the World award, which is awarded annually by FIFA, was limited to Argentine Lionel Messi, Portuguese Cristiano Ronaldo, and Dutchman Virgil van Dijk, according to what FIFA announced today, Monday. The award will be awarded at the Federation’s annual awards ceremony, scheduled this year in the Italian city of Milan on September 23. The winner is chosen through a voting process in which the leaders and coaches of the national teams participate, in addition to journalists and fans. The Dutchman, the Liverpool player, beat Barcelona's Spanish captain, Messi, and Juventus's Italian star, Ronaldo, to win the Best Player award at the European Union (UEFA) Awards last week. Van Dijk had a wonderful season with Liverpool, winning the Champions League title with them, and helped lead them to occupy second place in the English Premier League, only one point behind Manchester City. He was also chosen as the best player in the domestic league for the 2018-2019 season, becoming the first defender to win it since John Terry with Chelsea in 2005. The Dutchman also won the European Super Cup with Liverpool at the expense of Chelsea on penalties, in addition to leading the Netherlands national team to be runner-up in the first edition of the European Nations League. The best player in the world Three female players are competing for the title of the best: the Americans Megan Rapinoe and Alex Morgan, who won the 2019 World Cup in France this summer, and the Englishwoman Lucy Bronze, a player for the French club Lyon. Best goalkeeper The Brazilian national team's goalkeepers Alisson Becker (Liverpool) and Ederson (Manchester City) and the German Marc-Andre ter Stegen (Barcelona) are competing for the best goalkeeper award, knowing that Alisson won it from the European Union. Best trainer for men The title of best coach was limited to three who practice their profession in the English Premier League: the German Jurgen Klopp (Liverpool), the Spanish Pep Guardiola (Manchester City) and the Argentine Mauricio Pochettino (Tottenham). Best trainer for women As for the Best Coach Award for the Women's National Team, it will be competed by England's coach, Phil Neville, the United States' coach, Jill Ellis, and the Netherlands' coach, Sarina Wegman.
