Lionel Messi is on the brink of breaking another record as he looks to become the first active MLS player ever to win a Ballon d’Or. The Argentine superstar was named on the 30-man shortlist for the award given to the best player in the world, an award he’s won 7 times. Messi’s inclusion on the list is historic in itself, given the last active MLS player to do so was David Beckham in 2007 while playing for LA Galaxy. The eventual winner of the prestigious golden ball that season was Kaka, who went on to play in the MLS in the latter stages of his career. Should Messi win an 8th Ballon d’Or, which is possible given he guided Argentina to a World Cup, he would rewrite MLS history. Messi holds the record for the most jerseys sold on the first day of release, beating old rival Cristiano Ronaldo following his Man United return. Speaking of the Portuguese star, he missed out on the top 30 shortlist of the Ballon d’Or for the first time in 20 years. The winner will be announced on Oct. 30, 2023 at the Theatre du Chatelet in Paris, France.
